Announcement: Procedural Dungeon Generator
Square Forge is currently developing an exciting new procedural dungeon generator, and this project is unlike anything I've released before. Not only will the finished application be available as a free downloadable tool on Square Forge, but I'll also be documenting the entire development process in a free YouTube tutorial series.
If you're a Unity developer interested in procedural generation, you'll be able to follow along and build the generator yourself from the ground up. If you're a tabletop Game Master, you'll simply be able to download the finished application and begin creating battlemaps for your own adventures in seconds.
Built for Virtual Tabletop Gaming
For quite some time, Square Forge has offered printable PDF dungeon tile sets designed primarily for physical tabletop gaming. While those products work wonderfully at the table, virtual tabletop players often face a much more tedious process. Building a dungeon usually means hunting through dozens of individual tile pieces and assembling them like a giant puzzle before the session can even begin.
I wanted to remove that repetitive work and make dungeon creation feel effortless. The goal became simple: let the software handle the busy work so the Game Master can focus on creating adventures.
The Project Has Evolved
My first approach was an interactive dungeon editor. A Game Master could click anywhere on a large grid to place floor tiles, while the application automatically generated surrounding walls and rounded corners to produce a polished-looking dungeon.
While this worked well, play testing quickly revealed an important problem. Even with automatic wall placement, creating an entire dungeon by hand still required a fair amount of time. As a Game Master myself, I know there are moments when you simply need a battlemap right now.
That's when the project shifted toward procedural generation. Instead of drawing every room yourself, you'll be able to generate complete dungeon layouts in seconds, browse through the results until something catches your eye, and then make whatever adjustments you like before exporting the finished battlemap.
Designed for Game Masters, Not Programmers
One of the biggest design goals is to keep the interface approachable. Although the generator relies on sophisticated procedural generation techniques behind the scenes, I don't want users to think like programmers. You won't be expected to tweak values such as step counts, probability curves, or corridor percentages.
Instead, the generator will present options using terminology that Game Masters naturally understand. You'll be able to choose different dungeon styles, experiment with generation themes, and quickly produce maps without needing to understand the algorithms powering everything beneath the surface.
Still Under Active Development
I'm currently experimenting with multiple generation techniques, including the well-known Drunken Walker and Rooms-First methods. Each has unique strengths, and I'm exploring ways to combine them into simple options that produce a wide variety of interesting dungeon layouts.
Behind the scenes, the application is tackling challenges such as room placement, hallway connections, doorway generation, start and exit locations, and other procedural systems. However, the focus remains squarely on generating clean, attractive battlemaps for virtual tabletop play. Decorative props, monsters, and player tokens are intentionally left out so Game Masters can customize those elements within their preferred virtual tabletop software.
What's Coming Next
There is still plenty of work ahead, but I'm incredibly excited about where this project is heading. Over the coming months, I plan to release a complete YouTube tutorial series covering every stage of development, publish the finished generator as a free download here on Square Forge, expand the collection of virtual tabletop tile sets, and introduce several brand new dungeon environments for the generator to use.
Whether you're interested in learning procedural generation inside Unity or simply want a faster way to create beautiful battlemaps for your next adventure, I think you're going to enjoy what's coming.
